UK & Israel vs. Iran: A Bloody History
This is a podcast review of "Israel - Iran: the Confrontation" by Thierry Meyssan, who argues that the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran is misrepresented by media and predates the Islamic Republic.
Iran's deep-seated animosity towards the United Kingdom, the United States, and Israel stems from historical grievances, including a WWI genocide orchestrated by the British, and subsequent interventions like Operation Ajax which solidified US influence and the creation of a brutal secret police (SAVAK) by Israel.
Israel's only true enemy is the United Kingdom, which has historically fostered conflict to maintain regional instability.
Finally, the article suggests the current escalation is a diversion, triggered by Iranian intelligence exposing Rafael Grossi, the IAEA director, for allegedly compromising his neutrality by sharing sensitive information about Israel's nuclear program with Israel despite Israel not being a member of the organization.
Key Themes
Challenging the Official Narratives and Deep Historical Roots of the Conflict:
Refutation of Nuclear Cause: The source explicitly states, "The confrontation between Israel and Iran does not at all correspond to the image presented by the media. Its roots lie in a period before the Islamic Republic and has nothing to do with the construction of a nuclear bomb."
Long-Term Struggle: The conflict is described as a protracted engagement: "This war is expected to last until one of the adversaries is exhausted."
Emphasis on Iranian Trauma and External Enemies: The pervasive cry of "Death to the United Kingdom! Death to the United States! Death to Israel!" in Iran is attributed to deep historical suffering.
United Kingdom (First Enemy):
Iran suffered a genocide in 1917-1919, where "6 to 8 million people died of hunger out of a population of 18 to 20 million inhabitants," due to British military actions—despite Iran's neutrality.
The UK also installed and overthrew shahs, plundered oil, and organized "Operation Ajax" in 1953 to overthrow Mohammad Mossadegh.
United States (Second Enemy): The US became the dominant external power after "Operation Ajax," installing surveillance systems and effectively controlling the regime until the 1978 revolution.
Israel (Third Enemy): Israel's involvement stemmed from the British-imposed General Fazlollah Zahedi, who established the Savak secret police. "Several hundred 'revisionist Zionists' were sent by Yitzhak Shamir (then working for Mossad) to supervise them." The Savak's "horrors" are noted as a continuing traumatic memory for Iranians.
Israel's Shifting Enemy Perception and British Influence:
Iran Not Seeking Annihilation of Jewish Population: Contrary to Israeli "revisionist Zionist" propaganda, the source claims, "Iran – neither that of the Shah nor that of the Islamic Republic – never had the objective of annihilating the Jewish population of occupied Palestine." Instead, Iran's objective was "to destroy the State of Israel as Russia had destroyed the USSR."
United Kingdom as Israel's "Only Enemy": The source controversially asserts that the UK is "the only enemy of the State of Israel" due to its historical policy of ensuring Israel could "under no circumstances be capable of ensuring its own security." This policy dates back to the 1915 "The Future of Palestine" plan and the Balfour Declaration, favoring both "revisionist Zionists" (like Jabotinsky, and later Netanyahu) and the Muslim Brotherhood (including Hamas).
US Involvement and the Nuclear Question:
Historical US-Iran-Syria Dynamics: In the post-WWII era, US President Eisenhower sought to "balance Israeli influence" by organizing an alliance between Syria and Iran (the precursor to the "Axis of Resistance"). This alliance was forged "at Washington’s request" in 1953.
In 1979, President Carter "ousted the Shah of Iran" and facilitated Ruhollah Khomeini's return, replacing the Shah's "claim to Middle East domination by acquiring an atomic bomb supplied by French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing."
Israel's Initial Support for Iran: Israel initially "supported Iran against Iraq, supplying it with weapons as needed," including during the Iran-Contra scandal.
Continued Covert Ties: The Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline consortium (EAPC-B), half-owned by both states, continues to operate, demonstrating remnants of the Shah's era. A 2018 Israeli law punishes any publication about the company's owners with 15 years imprisonment.
"Alleged" Iranian Nuclear Weapon and US Policy: Rumors of an Iranian nuclear weapon began after the 2003 Iraq invasion, spread by London and Washington, mirroring the Iraqi WMD narrative.
Iran, conversely, submitted a UN proposal for "a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East."
The JCPOA (2015) was primarily a pragmatic measure, as per Susan Rice: "The goal was very simply to make a dangerous country considerably less dangerous. Nobody expected Iran to become a benevolent actor.”
US policy, even under Trump's withdrawal from the JCPOA, did not "verbally refuse to allow Iran to enrich uranium, not during negotiations."
Iran's Shiite Mobilization: During the period of US withdrawal from the JCPoA, "Iran began mobilizing Shiite communities across the Middle East to ensure its security." The source claims Iran "already had no more 'proxies' before Israel destroyed Hamas, Hezbollah, and many others. Each had become independent."
The Immediate Triggers and IAEA Controversies:
Mutual Intelligence Leaks: The current confrontation was triggered by Iranian intelligence publicly announcing they had stolen confidential documents on Israel's nuclear program on June 7, following Mossad's similar theft of Iranian nuclear documents in 2018.
IAEA Resolution Against Iran: On June 12, the IAEA Board of Governors, "under the chairmanship of Rafael Grossi," adopted a resolution stating, "the Director General, as stated in document GOV/2025/25, cannot provide assurance that Iran’s nuclear program is exclusively peaceful." This resolution referred the matter to the UN Security Council.
Allegations Against Rafael Grossi: The Iranian-seized Israeli documents allegedly "called into question the neutrality of the Argentinian Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). They show that he transmitted observations from his organization to Israel, even though Israel is not a member."
Grossi has also been criticized for his "strange silence during the Russian special operation in Ukraine," having revealed at the 2022 Davos Forum that Ukraine "had stockpiled 30,000 kilos of plutonium and another 40,000 kilos of enriched uranium at the Zaporizhzhia power plant," but subsequently saying "nothing more."
Israel's Attack as a Diversion: The source suggests that Israel's attack on Iran the day after the Iranian-seized documents were published is a tactic to "stop the Lebanese police and judicial investigations into a vast Israeli spy and terrorism network in Lebanon," similar to its behavior during the 2006 war against Lebanon.
